The Complete Guide to Washington Real Estate Practices
Published in Paperback by Washington Professional Publications (June, 1998)
Author: Alan N. Tonnon
Average review score:

What a bargain!
If a consumer were to seek out any of this information by consulting an attorney, the cost could easily be in the thousands, so to find such a handy explanation of real estate terms, so cheaply, is to find gold in your own backyard.
I can't imagine an attorney, real estate agent, or escrow agent practicing without this reference within reach at all times. If so, they should be charged with malpractice. And, for more icing, 90% of this book is usable in every state, and I doubt that most states even have their own book on real estate terms so this one can serve most professionals or consumers who want to proceed carefully just beautifully anywhere. Wait. It gets better: 90% of this information will still be useful and accurate decades from now, so this is one reference that will forever be valuable. Thank you, Mr Tonnon, for must have been more work than reward.

The Complete Tales of Washington Irving
Published in Hardcover by Olympic Marketing Corporation (April, 1975)
Authors: Washington Irving and Charles Neider
Average review score:

Proof of the talent of an important American author
This wonderful collection proves once and for all that there is more to Irving than "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow". The stories contained within this volume are wonderfully told and sparkle with imagination. The pieces from "The Alahambra" were the most impressive.

Conversations with God : Two Centuries of Prayers by African Americans
Published in Paperback by Perennial Press (November, 1995)
Author: James M. Washington
Average review score:

A Book that Uplifts the Soul
What a marvelous compendium of African American spirituality! Readers will invariably find themselves adding their own "Amen" with every turn of the page. The value of the book is enhanced by moving pictures and illustrations. A helpful bibliography and index are also included. It is regrettable that the late James M. Washington is not around to see the full fruit of his labor. He has certainly produced a work that is both timely and timeless in its relevance.

A Coup Attempt in Washington?: A European Mirror on the 1998-1999 Constitutional Crisis
Published in Hardcover by Palgrave Macmillan (January, 2001)
Author: Peter H. Merkl
Average review score:

A book the American public needs to read
"A Coup Attempt in Washington?" fills in many of the gaps left by media coverage in this country. eed, it appears that the European journalists were frequently more diligent in their investigative reporting than their American counterparts.

Information that was readily available to reporters and news commentators was not revealed, including the little-known fact that what the Founding Fathers had written in the original draft of the Constitution was crimes and misdemeanors against the State. The Founding Fathers would certainly have been aghast at the public flaying of a U.S. president for private sexual acts or the lies involving them.

The point the Europeans made was that not only did the punishment not fit the crime but that, in the process, we were throwing the baby out with the bath water. That the Constitution itself was in peril. And that there had been a wholesale violation of the separation of powers in the Constitution.

The author conveys with extraordinary clarity and passion what we already know and bears repeating: that democracy is so valuable, so precious, and it so defines us, that we must be its true guardians.

Superb readings in black history and theology.
Some of the best scholars of theology and sociology blend forces to provide a new focus on Afro-American religious experience, presenting specific cases in black history and theology to reveal underlying roots of black suffering. It's difficult to easily categorize Courage to Hope: it offers appeal not just to students of religion, but to those examining black history.

The Creation of Washington, D.C.
Published in Paperback by University Press of America (25 July, 1993)
Author: Kenneth R. Bowling
Average review score:

Excellent
This book provides a riveting account of America's first great compromise: the location of the capital. I could not put it down, marveling at how many times the capital was almost here or almost there, fascinated by the leaders involved in the debate. There is much to learn and understand well beyond how the capital came to be located in WDC: the embryonic and fragile balance of new states and regional interests, the other issues pressing on the country, such as assumption of state war debts, the economic interests and prospects of various factions, visions of how America's economy would blossom, the kernals of the Civil War, and especially, a deep insight and understanding of our country's early leaders, above all, George Washington, James Madison, and several Lees of Virginia. This is a must read not only for DC residents like me, but for anyone fascinated by our country's early days. This book made me want to be a fly on the wall at many of the pivotal proceedings and secret meetings that decided the location of our now beautiful capital city.
